“Here we are. Here we are together. Here we are together with everything. Here we are together with everything that is here now. Here we are together with all that is around us now. Here we are together with all we share now and in all the nows to come. Everything and everyone are here. Each and every one of us, and all other living beings and all the rest, are here and share the now. “ - Kurt Johannessen
Individually the participants tested, through repeated interventions, their embodied registration (many with the use of found props). Often students were fascinated by doing something repetitive and seemly unconventional in a public space. We noticed this forced them to go into an altered state of mind. Some talked for example, about hearing birds in the middle of the city center or others, smells that they never registered before. These "new reading" methods hopefully will help them to open up for new ways of designing. Perhaps based on a more intuitive rather than intellectual readings of space.
The aim of the workshop was to expose the students to different approaches of working with space, by strengthening intuitive processes. Many times, we as designers have preconceived ideas and references from similar environments. We hope the workshops method could help future architects to distinguish, in both new and familiar settings, novel readings and aid them to design beyond cultural appropriation.
